"Castle House Rag - One Step", performed by Europe's Society Orchestra, recorded "under the personal supervision of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Castle" on February 10, 1914. James Reese Europe was an important musical figure in the ragtime era (his band was the first Black band to record commercially). Vernon and Irene Castle were early popularizers of social dancing to syncopated music. From the original 12" 78rpm disk.

A Zampogna is an Italian bagpipe, and a Ciaramella is a small woodwind that plays the higher melody line over the Zampogna's drone. This combination is often used for traditional Christmas music, as in this circa 1920 recording of a "Novena Di Natale" by uncredited performers. From the original 78rpm disk.

This is perhaps John Philip Sousa's greatest march. Although he felt that the phonograph would take away from America and musicians, John Philip Sousa was rather pleased with the profits that he received from recordings. His concern that demand recorded music would take away from the musical chest and would hurt the amateur musician. He called this form of music "canned music" and coined the phrase. Sousa's band was one of the first to make commercial records in the early 1890's, but...
